How to Write Compositions
“Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.” Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936)”
Some of Kipling’s creations were prose, and some were poetry. I assume that your interest is in prose for school or college.
If you look at past exams, you will find that examiners agree with Kipling about the importance of words. More than half the exams are likely to require the ability to write good essays.
You can excel at essays
If I could succeed, anybody can! I used to hate writing because I didn’t know what to say. My teachers were less than complimentary about my half-page attempts. I would never have believed that I would one day write a book, or be the editor of Organic Grower.
Then I came across a book that turned my life around. I quickly discovered just how much fun it was to write, and it was difficult to stop me. If I had half an hour to kill I would pick a word at random and write an essay about it. One of my essays was on the subject of “Nothing”.
The change in me was so overwhelming that my teachers started asking me what had changed. I had been heading for academic failure, and now my homework consistently got top marks.
My headmaster told me that I had as much chance as the man in the moon of passing three Ordinary Level Cambridge GCE exams. After reading the book I passed eleven “O” level exams and 2 “A” levels, mainly because of my new ability to write compositions.
There have been several developments since that time, including multiple-choice questions and the Internet, and I hope that this site will show you how to excel at writing and passing your exams.
